“Sluggish” explores the slow draining feeling of fatigue. The piece is covered in slugs that move from the neck and down the vessel, coating every inch in heaviness. The forms neck and shoulders invite you to feel the need to hug the piece, similar to the desire to hug someone who is going through a hard time.

Sluggish

Sluggish began as a large oval coil pot. After the body of the pot was built, I let it dry to leather hard and then began applying the slugs.

For the texture, I began at the neck and worked my way down. This was the direction I wanted the texture to flow. Each slug was hand rolled and then cut in half long-ways, the flat edge was then scored/slipped to the form.

The piece was then left to dry and then Bisque-fired with a 12 hour preheat.

After the bisque-fire, I mixed a black oxide wash and applied it onto the piece with a brush. Then I wiped the excess off with a damp sponge so the oxide remained in the crevices of the slugs.

Lastly I fired the piece to cone 3 (2134F) and then the piece was finished.
